Rocky and Giant Planets: The Planet Shelves

In the Planet Shelves room, Professor Luna Moon sorts her planet models onto two shelves: the 4 small rocky planets on the bottom shelf and the 4 big giant planets on the top shelf.

Remember: The 4 planets closest to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, are rocky planets with solid ground. The 4 far ones, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, are giant planets made mostly of gas and ice, with no solid ground to stand on. Between the two groups is a ring of space rocks: the asteroid belt.

Magic trick: Rocky planets are small and near; giant planets are big and far.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Planet Shelves and find:

  • 🪨 Find the 4 rocky planets on the bottom shelf. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars: small, and closest to the Sun.
  • 🪐 Find the 4 giant planets on the top shelf. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune: 4 + 4 = 8 planets.
  • 🖼️ Find the 5 shooting star pictures. A shooting star is not really a star: it is a tiny space rock burning up in the sky.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
