Factor Rectangles: The Fairy Garden
Welcome to the Fairy Garden! Lily plants her tulips in neat rectangles of rows and columns, with no gaps. Every rectangle she can make shows a factor pair.
Remember: A rectangle of rows and columns is called an array. 2 rows of 6 and 3 rows of 4 both make 12, so 2 × 6 and 3 × 4 are factor pairs of 12. 1 long row (1 × 12) always works too.
Magic trick: Turning a rectangle on its side doesn’t make a new one: 3 rows of 4 and 4 rows of 3 are the same factor pair.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Fairy Garden and find:
- 🌷 Find the pink tulip bed. 2 rows of 7 = 14 tulips, so 2 and 7 are a factor pair of 14.
- 🌼 Find the yellow tulip bed. 3 rows of 4 = 12 tulips, so 3 and 4 are a factor pair of 12.
- 🍄 Find the red toadstools along the path. Count them: 5 toadstools. 5 can only make one long row.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
