How Far Apart?: The Fairy Garden Paths

In the Fairy Garden, the paths run in straight lines like a grid, and the fairies walk only along the paths, never through the flower beds. How many steps is it from one toadstool house to another?

Remember: When two points are on the same line, subtract to find how far apart they are: from (2, 3) to (2, 7) is 7 − 3 = 4 steps. When you go across and up along the paths, find each part and add them: 3 across and 2 up is 3 + 2 = 5 steps of walking.

Magic trick: Count the jumps between the points, not the points themselves: from 3 to 7 is 4 jumps.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Fairy Garden and find:

  • 🍄 Find the toadstool houses. There are 5, each beside the grid of paths.
  • 🧚 Find the fairies on the paths. There are 4. They walk only along the straight paths, across and up.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
