Mirrors and Reflection: Mermaid Lagoon
The water at Mermaid Lagoon is so calm today that it shines like a mirror! Pink flamingos are wading in it, and Octavia has set out her shell-shaped mirrors on a rock.
Remember: When light bounces off something, we call it reflection. Smooth, shiny surfaces like a mirror or still water reflect light neatly, so you see a clear picture; rough surfaces scatter it. White and pale things reflect lots of light; dark things absorb (soak up) more light, so they warm up faster in the Sun.
Magic trick: Reflect = bounce back. Smooth and shiny bounces a picture; rough and bumpy bounces a blur.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Mermaid Lagoon and find:
- 🦩 Find the 4 flamingos and their reflections. The still water is smooth, so it reflects a clear picture of each one.
- 🐚 Find the 3 shell mirrors. Smooth and shiny: perfect for reflecting light.
- 🏖️ Find the 5 beach towels. In the Sun, the dark towels absorb more light and get warmer than the white ones.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
