Loud and Soft, High and Low: The Barn Dance

Tonight is Farmer Daisy’s Barn Dance! There are bells from big to small, a xylophone and drums, and fluffy earmuffs by the door for anyone who wants things a little quieter.

Remember: Big vibrations make loud sounds and small vibrations make soft sounds. Pitch is how high or low a sound is: fast vibrations make high notes and slow vibrations make low notes. Small, short, thin or tight things make higher notes; big, long, thick or loose things make lower notes. Very loud sounds can hurt your ears, so cover them.

Magic trick: A tiny mouse squeaks high, a big cow moos low. Small is high, big is low!

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of Farmer Daisy’s Barn Dance and find:

  • 🔔 Find the 5 hand bells. The biggest bell rings the lowest note and the smallest bell rings the highest.
  • 🎵 Find the xylophone. The long bars play low notes and the short bars play high notes.
  • 🎧 Find the 3 pairs of earmuffs. They protect ears from very loud sounds.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
