Fraction Basics: Chef Rosie's Pie Shop
Welcome to Chef Rosie’s Pie Shop! Chef Rosie always cuts her pies into equal slices, so everyone gets a fair share. A fraction tells you how many of those equal slices you are talking about.
Remember: In 3/8, the bottom number (8) is the denominator: the whole pie has 8 equal slices. The top number (3) is the numerator: we are talking about 3 of those slices.
Magic trick: Read the fraction from the bottom up: first ask “how many equal parts?” (bottom), then “how many am I counting?” (top).
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Chef Rosie’s Pie Shop and find:
- 🍒 Find the cherry pie. It has 4 equal slices and 1 is on Millie’s plate, so Millie has 1/4 of the pie and 3/4 is left.
- 🫐 Find the blueberry pie. Some slices have been eaten already! If Chef Rosie cut it into 8 equal slices and 3 are gone, then 3/8 has been eaten.
- 🍋 Find the lemon tart. It’s cut into 2 pieces, but one is much bigger! Those pieces are not halves, because halves must be equal.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
