Steak and Stake, Waist and Waste: Millie's Kitchen

Welcome to Millie’s Kitchen, where Grandma Bea is making dinner! Two steaks sizzle in the pan, three little tomato plants grow by the window tied to wooden stakes, and Grandma Bea ties her apron at her waist. The peels go in the compost bin, so nothing goes to waste.

Remember: A steak is a thick slice of meat or fish that you cook: “Grandma Bea cooks a steak.” A stake is a pointy stick pushed into the ground: “The tomato plant is tied to a stake.” Your waist is the middle of your body, where a belt goes: “Tie the apron at your waist.” To waste is to throw away something you could still use: “Don’t waste food.”

Magic trick: You eat a steak: both have ea. A stake is a garden stick, and it ends in ake, like rake. Waste ends like taste: don’t waste food that tastes good! Waist has an i, like hip, another part of your body.
