What Is an Angle?: Millie's Kitchen

In Millie’s Kitchen, Grandma Bea props open her recipe books and cuts triangle slices of pizza. Wherever two straight lines start from the same point, they make an angle: a recipe book opened like a V, or the pointy tip of a pizza slice.

Remember: An angle is made by two straight lines called rays that start at the same point. That point is the vertex. The size of an angle is how wide the rays open, not how long they are.

Magic trick: Make a crocodile with your arms! Your elbows together are the vertex, your arms are the rays, and the wider the crocodile opens its mouth, the bigger the angle.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Kitchen and find:

  • 📖 Find the open recipe books on the counter. There are 3. Each one stands up like a V: its spine is the vertex and its two covers are the rays of an angle.
  • 🍕 Find the pizza slices on the mint tray. There are 4, each a triangle with 3 corners, so 4 × 3 = 12 angles.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
