Challenge, Two-Step Stories: The Sprinkle Bakery
Welcome to the Sprinkle Bakery, Chef Rosie’s busy shop full of cupcakes, cakes and donuts! These stories have two steps: first add or take away, then use that answer for the next step.
Remember: Read the whole story, then ask: what do I find first? 250 cupcakes, 120 sold, then 85 sold: 250 − 120 = 130, then 130 − 85 = 45 left.
Magic trick: Check with an estimate! About 250 − 100 − 100 = 50, and 45 is close, so the answer makes sense.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Sprinkle Bakery and find:
- 🧁 Find the trays of cupcakes. 3 trays of 6: count 6, 12, 18 cupcakes. Sell 5 and 18 − 5 = 13 are left.
- 🎂 Find the layer cakes on the shelf. Count them: 4 cakes.
- 🍩 Find the sprinkle donuts. There are 5 donuts. Chef Rosie bakes 3 more and sells 2: 5 + 3 = 8, then 8 − 2 = 6 donuts. Two steps!
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
