Adding and Subtracting Money: The Lemonade Stand

Welcome back to the Lemonade Stand! Zoe and Mia sell lemonade and lemon cakes, and they add up what they earn and work out the change. Money works just like other numbers, with a point between the dollars and the cents.

Remember: Line up the points, then add or subtract as usual and put the point back in the answer. Cents first: 100 cents make $1.00. $4.75 + $3.50 = $8.25.

Magic trick: Think in cents: $4.75 is 475 cents and $3.50 is 350 cents. 475 + 350 = 825 cents, which is $8.25.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Lemonade Stand and find:

  • 🥤 Find the paper cups. 2 rows of 4: 4 + 4 = 8 cups. If a cup costs $0.75, two cups cost $0.75 + $0.75 = $1.50.
  • 🍋 Find the pitchers. Yellow and pink: 2 pitchers.
  • 🍰 Find the lemon cakes. There are 3 lemon cakes. If one costs $2.50 and you pay $5.00, your change is $5.00 − $2.50 = $2.50.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
