Adding Without Regrouping: The Fairy Garden
Welcome to the Fairy Garden! Lily is planting tulips between the toadstools, and butterflies flutter over the flower beds. Here the numbers are friendly: each place adds up to 9 or less, so nothing has to move.
Remember: Line the numbers up by their places, then add the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds: 231 + 45 → 1 + 5 = 6 ones, 3 + 4 = 7 tens, and the 2 hundreds stay: 276.
Magic trick: Say it in places: 342 + 205 is “3 hundreds and 2 hundreds, 4 tens and 0 tens, 2 ones and 5 ones”: 547.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Fairy Garden and find:
- 🌷 Find the pink tulips. There are 6 tulips. If Lily plants 3 more, she has 6 + 3 = 9 tulips.
- 🦋 Find the butterflies. Count them: 4 butterflies. If 2 more arrive, that’s 4 + 2 = 6 butterflies.
- 🚿 Find the watering cans on the bench. There are 3 watering cans, one for each flower bed.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
