Three Kinds of Rock: Rainbow Castle
Welcome to Rainbow Castle! Princess Ruby’s courtyard shows off all three kinds of rock: three big rocks on stands, sandy-orange sandstone steps and smooth white marble swans.
Remember: Igneous rock forms when melted rock cools and hardens (granite, pumice). Sedimentary rock forms from layers of sand, mud and shells pressed together over a very long time (sandstone, limestone). Metamorphic rock is rock that was changed by heat and squeezing deep underground (marble, slate). Over a very long time, one kind of rock can turn into another.
Magic trick: Igneous = fire (it starts as melted rock), sedimentary = sandwich (layers stacked up), metamorphic = makeover (an old rock changed into a new one).
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Rainbow Castle and find:
- 🪨 Find the 3 big rocks on their stands. Speckled granite is igneous, the striped one is sedimentary and the swirly white marble is metamorphic: 3 kinds of rock.
- 🪜 Find the sandy-orange steps up to the castle door. They are sandstone: grains of sand pressed together in layers.
- 🦢 Find the 4 marble swans. Marble was once limestone, changed by heat and squeezing deep underground.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
