Soil: Farmer Daisy's Farm
On Farmer Daisy’s farm, the vegetable patch has a little glass window in the ground, so you can see the soil from the side with its earthworms wiggling. Next to it, compost bins full of old leaves are slowly turning into rich, dark soil.
Remember: Soil is a mix of tiny bits of rock, humus (rotted dead plants and leaves), water and air. Sand has the biggest grains and lets water drain away fast; clay has the tiniest grains, feels sticky and holds water. Earthworms help by mixing the soil and making tunnels for air and water. The dark top layer is topsoil, and new soil takes hundreds of years to form.
Magic trick: Soil has 4 ingredients: rock bits, rotted leaves, rainwater and room for air.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Farmer Daisy’s farm and find:
- 🪱 Find the 5 earthworms in the soil. Their tunnels let air and water into the soil.
- 🥬 Find the 6 cabbages. 2 rows of 3 = 6 cabbages, all growing in rich topsoil.
- 🍂 Find the 3 compost bins. Old leaves rot into humus, the part of soil that feeds plants.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
