Negative or Fraction: The Sprinkle Bakery
At the Sprinkle Bakery, Chef Rosie uses two different kinds of number all day long. She cuts brownies into fractions, like 1/2 and 3/4 of a tray, and she keeps her ice cream in a freezer at −18°C. Both have a little line, but they mean very different things!
Remember: A fraction like 1/2 is a part of a whole: half a tray of brownies. Its line goes between two numbers, one on top and one below. 1/2 is more than zero: it sits between 0 and 1 on the number line. A negative number like −2 has its dash in front, and it means below zero. Every negative number is smaller than zero, and smaller than any fraction of a tray!
Magic trick: Look where the line is! A line between two numbers makes a fraction: a piece. A dash in front makes a negative: below zero.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Sprinkle Bakery and find:
- 🍨 Find the ice-cream tubs in the frosty freezer. There are 2 rows of 3: 6 tubs, kept far below zero!
- 🍫 Find the brownie trays. Each tray is cut into 2 rows of 4: 8 brownies, so one brownie is 1/8 of a tray.
- 🫙 Find the sprinkle jars. There are 3 on the counter.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
