Floors Below the Ground: The Star Tower

The Star Tower reaches up to the sky, but Professor Luna Moon also has secret rooms underground: a telescope workshop and a star-map library! Her glass elevator has buttons for the ground floor (0), the floors above it (1, 2, 3) and the floors below the ground (−1, −2, −3).

Remember: Floors above the ground are positive, and floors below the ground are negative. Going up makes the floor number bigger; going down makes it smaller. To find how many floors apart two floors are on opposite sides of 0, add the floors above to the floors below: from floor 3 to floor −2 is 3 + 2 = 5 floors.

Magic trick: A number line standing up tall is just like an elevator: up is bigger, down is smaller, and zero is the ground floor.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Star Tower and find:

  • 🏰 Find the floors of the tower. There are 3 floors above the ground floor, like floors 1, 2 and 3, and 3 floors below it, like −1, −2 and −3.
  • 🔭 Find the telescopes on the roof. There are 3, pointing up at the stars.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
