Adding Fractions: Millie's Paint Party

Welcome to Millie’s Paint Party! Zoe and Mia are painting a garden wall made of 8 equal panels, so each panel is 1/8 of the wall. Every time they paint another panel, the painted fraction adds up.

Remember: When the bottom numbers are the same, add the top numbers and keep the bottom number: 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8. The bottom number tells you the size of the panels, and adding more panels doesn’t change their size.

Magic trick: Say it in words: 2 eighths + 3 eighths = 5 eighths, just like 2 apples + 3 apples = 5 apples.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Paint Party and find:

  • 🎨 Find the big wall of 8 panels. 2 panels are pink and 3 are mint, so 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8 of the wall is painted. 3/8 is still white!
  • 🖌️ Find the little fence of 4 boards. 1 board is yellow and 2 are lavender: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 of the fence is painted.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
