Estimating Differences: The Star Tower
At the Star Tower, Professor Luna Moon keeps jars of gold stars and silver stars and counts the stars she spots every night. To know about how many more, she rounds both numbers and takes away.
Remember: Estimate a difference: round each number, then subtract. 812 β 394 is about 800 β 400 = 400. 73 β 28 is about 70 β 30 = 40. Round both numbers, and round them to the same place.
Magic trick: Round first, then take away the round numbers: 800 β 400 is as easy as 8 β 4 with two zeros on the end.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Star Tower and find:
- β¨ Find the 7 jars of gold stars. If each jar holds about 100 stars, that’s about 700 gold stars.
- π Find the 3 jars of silver stars. About 300 silver stars. So there are about 700 β 300 = about 400 more gold stars!
- π± Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
